The Other Almanac Open Call is closed for submissions.

  • We are looking for essays, columns, poetry, and visual work. We love fiction, but are probably not going to read it if you send it.

  • All accepted submissions will receive an honorarium.

$100 for written work and $50 for visual work.

The open call ends on March 20th 2024 at midnight. If accepted you can expect to hear from us within three weeks. We try and respond to every submission, but depending on the volume we receive we may not be able to.

Essay Guidelines:

  • Try to keep your word count between 500 - 1400.

  • Please read our past editions before submitting.

  • We are looking for work on ecology, plants, migration, animals, cities, art, architecture, farming, fermenting, war, celebrities, cooking, artificial intelligence, biology, design, God/s, climate, water, technology, Incarceration, calendars, the planets, culture, and New York City or New York State.

  • Essays should be surprising, poetic, metaphoric, experimental, personal, or analytic. We will most likely not take your work if you are writing in the style of a traditional research paper.

    Column Guidelines:

    Columns are recurring monthly (12) or seasonal (4) short works. Our past columns have included herbal tips, fashion tips, astrology, recipes, and phenology. We are always looking for creative ideas to add to our columns.

  • Word count for columns is under 250 per month (12) or season (4).

  • Columns can be tips, guides, anecdotes, activities, or anything that relates to monthly or seasonal changes throughout the year.

    Poetry Guidelines:

  • Aim for a word count between 3 - 500.

  • Same themes as above!

    Image Guidelines:

  • We are looking for images of original art. We are open to all 2d and 3d materials and processes.
